For those of you who are unfamiliar with Burke's pentad it is made up of five key elements to analyze and dramatize human symbolic interaction. These elements consist of the act, agent, scene, agency, and purpose. Each element is used to dramatize an event to show how persuasive techniques function to bring out specific results. We feel the results intended from the Iowa City Press Citizen article was to make Hawkeye fans reevaluate their loyalty to the current football team. It is only the start of the season with a relatively young team and new quarterback, so the football program has some holes they need to fill to in order to be a force in the Big Ten conference. Fans need to have sympathy and give them their support by filling Kinnick, win or lose.
Act-- The lack of student attendance at the University of Iowa home football game.
Agent-- The students not attending the football game.
Scene-- The location of this act is Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
Agency-- The students showing less support based on the fact that they did not actually attend the game.
Purpose-- This was done because of the recent loses by the University of Iowa football team.
REFLECTION
I felt the original "No Show" blog was a tad bit vague. We introduced the name of the pentad and listed off the five key elements, but their is more to tell. I added another paragraph explaining when and why the pentad is used. I also put in my opinion of the article on why it was written. Of course it was published to inform Iowa City of the low attendance, but I'm proposing it was printed to dramatize the situation and to make Hawkeye fans reconsider not going to the games.
